Say What?

Here we are at the end of October and the holidays will be here before you know it.  So we are stepping up our game coverage to help you guys out with some great gift ideas.  As we've said before the smaller game designers often have some of the most unique ideas and one of our favorites has to be Twilight Creations.  This new card game is definitely unique....

Gameplay

Say What? is the world's first card game meant to be played while the players are doing something else.  In fact this game can be played while a group is playing another more in depth game, such as a strategy game or RPG.  The game is made up of 100 cards each containing a word or action.  In the basic game every player is dealt cards.  When they see another player say a word on one of their cards or do an action they may give that card to that player.  Each card has a point value assigned to it based on its commonality in general interaction.  At the end of a predetermined time limit the person with the least points wins the game.  Twilight Creations has provided three different variants to the game that allow it to be played with as few as two players and as many as 20.

There's really nothing to learning how to play this game and it's supposed to be that way.  It's meant as something to do while you are waiting for your turn in an RPG (games where each turn is usually quite long) or for a situation where everyone is hanging out and chatting or watching a movie or television.  As I mentioned 2 to 20 can play this game but we found it to be best when there are as many people playing as possible.  Also, we enjoyed the game best in a party atmosphere where people are just having drinks and talking.  The game forces people who may not have talked before to interact.  Say you're playing at a party and someone you don't know across the room commits an act on your card.  Well now you have an excuse to walk up to that person and strike up a conversation.

Say What? isn't meant to be a primary game.  You can't sit down with these cards and just play this game.  If you tried everyone would just be sitting around waiting for each other to do or say something.  But put this game in the context of a party or as a part of another on going game and it's great fun.  That may be the only problem with this game.  Some hardcore gamers who are playing RISK or Dungeons and Dragons may not want this secondary game as a distraction.  That's really the only issue we have with it.  Say What? works best in a party atmosphere and it's a fantastic way to get people talking and interacting.

Presentation

The cards are sturdy and well made but the art is a little too kid-ish for our tastes.  The text however is bright and easy to read so the cards aren't something you have to spend a lot of time concentrating on during gameplay.

Overall

Wow, this is such a great tool for getting people at a party who don't know each other to start interacting.  This may be the perfect game for non gamers.  A little something extra at your next dinner party.  Also at group events instead of doing door prizes you could run this game and give winners the prize.  It's a simple and fun extra to go along with a night's already planned events.
