If you haven't heard of Three Sheets, and more importantly Mojo, the network on which the series airs, it may be because in the scheme of things Mojo is filling a pretty small niche, but the niche is growing. Mojo is an exclusively hi def network featuring programs that air in high quality 1080 video and in 5.1 digital sound.
The Series
remember a little show that aired a while back on Comedy Central called Insomniac? That series featured comedian Dave Atell traveling across the country and on occasion around the world staying up all night in different cities and hitting bars and finding other unique things to do overnight in each location. I actually really loved this series and found Atell to be quite funny. Unfortunately the series got the axe before it should have so when I heard about Three Sheets I had hopes that this new series would fill the void left by Insomniac.
In Three Sheets Zane Lamprey checks out the drinking customs of different locations all around the world from Champaign in France to Saki in Japan and everywhere else you could imagine. We were asked to review the season one DVD release but were only sent one episode so it'll be tough to say if the concept holds up beyond the one episode we have. In the episode Zane travels to Japan and hits various bars trying many different varieties of Saki. I found myself quite interested to see just how Saki is made when Zane takes a trip to a brewery after drinking the previous night with the owner of the brewery.
Zane is a charismatic and funny guy who really makes people feel comfortable with him leading to some funny situations. So in the episode we get a bit of Japan as a travelogue, a lot of drinking, and a bit of information on how the drink of the week is made including some history about the drink. Even if you aren't a drinker you'll probably be surprised at how much fun this episode is and how interesting the process of making Saki is too.
Now for the problems. This series just tries to hard to be goofy and trips over itself a lot. There are cartoon sound effects that saturate the episode and "the professor" utilized in a few sequences giving background about Saki is more annoying than humorous. Also, it seems that Zane relies too much on jokes about one of his college friend's that isn't even on the show for laughs.
I can't say how the whole season is but this episode despite some complaints is still a lot of fun.
7.5/10
The Video
The series looks pretty good on this DVD but you wouldn't know the series had originally aired in hi def. Colors are good for the most part and for a television series the grain is very minimal, especially since the series is shot on the road. There are instances where the image gets oversaturated and washed out and other scenes where detail drops off in the dark but overall the presentation of this episode is solid.
7/10
The Audio
The 5.1 digital surround audio is clean and clear with dialogue coming though crisp for the most part. There are a few instances where the dialogue just doesn't come through and those scenes are subtitled.
6/10
The Packaging and
Bonus Features
There's no packaging here and on the single disc we receive there were no extras to go along with the episode so we really can't rate this section.
N/A/10
We really can't give an overall rating here because we've only seen one episode. The one episode was fun though.
