Flee Puny Humans: Comic Book Heaven
A compilation of a fanzine that takes a humorous look
at comic books.
Flee Puny
Humans is a hard back compilation of an intriguing and humorous fanzine titled
Comic Book Heaven. The book feels like a sort of stream of thought mish mash of
musings related to the wonderful and bizarre world of vintage comic books.
Flee Puny Humans is chock full of interesting stories and anecdotes. One of
the best parts of the book and fanzine is the section called “Me Am Weird”. In this section Scott shares
synopsis and art reprints of classic comic books from the old school comics. Those stories may have sounded great at the time they were
written but now they are completely hilarious.
“I can’t endanger Gotham City by my presence,
except in emergencies!”
-Batman uses Bat Logic
One of my favorites is an early issue of Superman where a young boy runs away
from home. His parents go to the Daily Planet in search of Superman rather than
call the police. Lois and Clark go on a search for Superman rather than calling
the police. Meanwhile the young kid runs into a shape-changing alien. The alien
changes into many different inanimate objects while retaining his big red eyes.
Once Superman finally makes an appearance he knows exactly where to go find the
kid, not because of his super hearing or telescopic vision but because he knows
that runaway kids always head for “open country”.
This compilation offers a look at the vintage comic book perspective on life,
and love with sections such as Lovin’ every minute of it: Manly Men and No one
knows anything about love! Comic book interpretations of these situations make
for really funny reading.
One part that brought back a lot of memories was the short montage of comic book
advertising. The weight gainer, space suit and mystery mask, all classic! The
only thing missing was the x-ray glasses. I always wanted those!
“When I give an order I wanna hear your eyeballs
pop!"
Nick Fury leader of S.H.I.E.L.D.
There's vintage art, side-splitting quotes, fascinating stories and so much more in
this great book. Flee Puny Humans has some history of vintage comics but it
tends to focus more on fun. This book is a must for comic book collectors
or anyone interested in a less academic and more fun look at the history of
comic books. The only problem I had with this book is that I wish it was longer.
The fanzine is still being published so maybe we will get additional volumes at
some point. This book makes me want to head to my local comic book shop and dig
through the used bins to find and read some of these classic comics myself!
“Excuse me, but there’s something on your chin--- my fist!’
-Robin to a thug
